Normal cholesterol levels are a topic that most people do not know anything about. Cholesterol is a topic that more people need to be more aware of. Cholesterol levels should be between 160 and 200 mg/dl. If cholesterol levels get too low there is an increased risk of cancer, respiratory disease, and depression. If it gets too high, there is a high risk of heart disease and stroke. Therefore, stay within the target range of 160-200 mg/dl.

Cholesterol’s main function is to assist in building and maintaining membranes in the body. It mainly keeps these membranes flexible over a wide temperature range. Inside these membranes, cholesterol is needed for nerve and cell signaling and conduction. It is also required for the manufacture of fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. It also helps in the manufacture of bile acids.

Even though cholesterol seems like a good thing, it is bashed by the modern medical community due to our modern diets. Generally, the liver will only make as much cholesterol as the body needs. But we have introduced a bunch of foods that are made from animal products such as meat and dairy. Since all animal products contain cholesterol, all who eat these end up with this extra cholesterol.

When you use statin drugs to keep the production of cholesterol down, there is a big possibility that your cholesterol level will drop below 160. If you are currently taking statins, have your doctor check your blood profiles regularly. If you begin to experience difficulty breathing or depression, see a doctor immediately. Also be aware that if you lose some sex-drive while taking statin drugs it could mean your cholesterol is dropped below 160.

When you eat more cholesterol than the body can dispose of, it builds up in the arteries. This leads to a condition known as atherosclerosis. Over time, the arteries become narrower and blood is eventually cut off from the heart which is called a heart attack. So too much of a good thing is also a bad thing. You only want enough cholesterol in your system to function normally. Your heart is one of the most important organs in your body, and you want to take care of it. Having too much cholesterol in your system is very bad for it.

See your doctor immediately if you suspect you have high cholesterol. Take steps to take control of extreme levels. A low cholesterol diet may be necessary, and exercise will help lower your cholesterol levels more quickly. If you choose to take medicine to help your cholesterol levels, be extremely careful and only take it for as long as you need. Be sure to change your dietary habits to maintain the levels when you are off the drugs.

Cholesterol is a serious issue, and should be something you know a lot about. Have it checked often so you can be sure you are healthy. Check out diet plans to help control it. Do anything you can to keep within normal cholesterol levels.

High Cholesterol Symptoms

Cholesterol is a lipid, or a type of fat, specifically a steroid, and it is often described as a waxy substance. It is made in the human liver and is also found in numerous types of foods. Although the typical view of cholesterol is negative, as it does have negative health associations, it plays a key role in its production of hormones and the structural role it provides in cells. Due to the nature of cell membranes, cholesterol helps to reduce membrane fluidity, a key to maintaining a balance within cells that allows life to exist. It should be noted that there are different types of cholesterol, low density lipoproteins, high density lipoproteins, and very low density lipoproteins. Low density lipoproteins, frequently called LDLs, are sometimes referred to as “bad” cholesterol and are the main culprit behind dangerous plaque buildup. High density lipoproteins, also known as HDLs, are often referred to as “good” cholesterol, they help the body to eliminate LDLs, thus having more HDLs is often good for health. Finally, very low density lipoproteins are much like low density lipoproteins, having similar function and stature, and are often merely regarded as low density lipoproteins.

Cholesterol, as described, is both a key component in our bodies and a possible danger to health. If too much cholesterol is present in the body, plaque can form in the body’s arteries, the blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart. Essentially, cholesterol leads to a buildup against the walls of arteries, thus reducing the flow of blood, and with it the flow of oxygen, which is vital to cells. Further, not only is the flow of blood reduced, the heart must work harder to pump the necessary amount of blood to cells and the arteries must take a greater strain as well. The buildup of plaque and subsequent health issues such as heart disease, heart attack, stroke, and pulmonary embolism, though not officially high cholesterol symptoms, represent a class of pseudo high cholesterol symptoms. In fact, high cholesterol more than doubles the risk of heart disease.

The fact that heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States is reason enough to take high cholesterol symptoms seriously. In any situation in which a condition poses serious health risks to its sufferers it is wise to be knowledgeable of its symptoms, as would be the case for high cholesterol symptoms. Unfortunately, due to the nature of high cholesterol, a risk factor, there are no true high cholesterol symptoms, only the pseudo high cholesterol symptoms previously mentioned. In other words, high cholesterol does not directly confer symptoms, it puts its sufferers at risk for greater health issues. Thus, with no symptoms to detect high cholesterol, the only sure method of detection is a cholesterol test, which should be administered at least every five years, even better if annually administered. Further, triglyceride testing, another type of fat that causes health issues in high concentrations, often occurs alongside cholesterol testing, adding yet another reason in favor of cholesterol level testing. High cholesterol represents a serious health issues that is often a precursor to gravely serious health conditions.
